Kodachadri trek is one such gem, you have to explore. Kodachadri is a trekking spot. Kodachadri is widely known. It is situated in Karnataka’s Shimoga district. It is also the 10th highest peak in Karnataka, so not everyone can climb it. Located in Shimoga district in Karnataka, it is around 20 km away from Kollur near where the famous Mookambika temple is situated.

The place is pretty beautiful with the engrossing lush greenery around. The best time to attempt this trek is from September to February when the weather is not just fine but also quite comfortable. One can climb through the entire trek from the foothill which is 15 km. Rather, it is easy to just take a jeep to the convenient spot and then climb from there.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Proclaimed as a heritage site by the government of Karnataka, it is one of the best treks in India. For the best trekking experience, you must be aware of the best time to visit Karnataka. According to the trekkers that have already climbed the Kodachadri mountain peak, the best months to head for a trek are between September to January. From comfortable weather to the best flora and fauna, you can see the real beauty of the Kodachadri mountain peak during these months.

GETTING HERE

The best way to reach Kodachadri is by boarding a flight to Bangalore and then hiring a cab to Nittur where you can stay at a hotel. Start the Kodachadri Trek the next day. Grab a train to Kundapura Railway Station and grab a cab to Nittur. Your trip from the airport will take about 2 hours and 30 minutes and from the Kundapura Railway Station, it will take about 7 hours.

WHAT YOU NEED

Climbing a trek needs preparation and research to have a great climbing experience. These are the necessities that need to be carried :

  • Essentials are a must when packing. It is important to pack a first aid kit and medications for emergencies.
  • Take clothes that you need and wear trek-friendly clothes that won’t be uncomfortable.
  • Carry water bottles.
  • Take snack food items for the trip.
  • If you’re going camping, make sure to carry all the necessary camping items too.
  • Don’t carry heavy items that do not need the trek.
  • Get the needful permission orders before you come trekking.

ITINERARY

When you plan your trail, make a plan to follow and jot down the places you want to stop by and take in the sights. The place can be reached through two routes, one that includes the trails to Karekatte and the other one is where the trails reach around to Marakuttaka. The former one has a faster trail and is best for the ones who are not experienced in climbing and need an easy trail to climb.

Once you start climbing, you will cross through the Hidlumane Falls and then walk through the thick forest around. Once you cover the first half of the mountain, you will find a temple where you can visit. Jeeps are the only mode of transportation there due to the unstable roads.

Camping is the most preferred activity if you want to make the best out of the trip. The camping spot is near the Kodachadri Information Bureau where you need permission to go camping.

If you are in Bangalore you can also do camping in Coorg as it is a very nice location.

After that, you can start from the parking spot from Shankara Peetham and go till you reach the final level of the trek, which includes 5 km that will take you to the Peetham. The one thing that’s unique about this spot is the 40 ft iron pillar that stands high in front of the temple. It is the copy of the Trishul used by Goddess Mookambika to kill Mookasura.
