The town and the developer had put in a lot of effort to turn two pieces of unmanaged dump property into a minor league baseball stadium with a budget of $15 million, and their efforts were finally paying off. The client of SME, USPBL, was in the last phases of getting ready for opening day, but the duty of fixing up the light poles had fallen to a lower priority
Positive First Impression
jimmy john’s field could not sit idly by and allow this significant opportunity to make a positive first impression to pass them by without taking action. We got in touch with Utica’s Department of Public Works in order to plan a volunteer effort that would be led by SME to repair the light poles.
We were prepared to get started on this do-it-yourself job once we were given permission to do so and the type of paint that we intended to use was authorized. It was simply not going to happen before the first day of the season.
Team Of SME Volunteers A Week
It took a team of SME volunteers a week to match the paint color and obtain supplies. The volunteers on the team were Jeff Lanier, Bret Hart, Bryan Bernard, and Andrew Brucki. They were able to collect and use a sufficient quantity of supplies from their own homes thanks to the combined efforts of the four of them.
It was decided to give each volunteer the task of either preparing, cleaning, or painting the room. On a workday, the group started working at approximately 3:30 in the afternoon and continued until 6:30 in the evening. After one visit, three hours, and the participation of four SME volunteers, 10 shining black light poles were installed and were waiting for a sold-out crowd.

This altered the entire atmosphere of the City’s sidewalk. During the 2017–2018 season, over 275,000 spectators walked this sidewalk (twice). Andy Appleby, the founder of the USBPL and owner of jimmy john’s field as well as Jacqueline Noonan, Mayor of the City of Utica, expressed their gratitude to SME for taking care of this very visible issue so that a positive first impression could be made.
