INTRODUCTION

Ramanagara is a city located in Karnataka, just 50 km away from Karnataka. It is widely recognized for the iconic movie Sholay shot in the surrounding hills of Ramanagara, now called Ramagiri hills, now has a nickname as “Sholay hills’ ‘. Many people flock here to visit the green meadows, grassy hills, abundant flora, and fauna, camping, trekking, combing through streams, etc. It has many historic places to visit and many local cultures and sightseeing to take in the local culture.

During Tippu Sultan’s rule, the town was known as Shamserabad. In pre-independence times, after Sir Barry Close (1756-1813 ) it was called Hospet. This name is retained in geology. It was then changed to Ramanagara. The former Chief Minister of Karnataka state Mr. Kangal Hanumanthayya renamed it Ramanagara.

Also, Ramanagara is derived from the historical story of Ramayana. Immensely, known as “Silk City” and “Silk Town”, for its robust sericulture. You would be surprised to know that the silk generated from this region is used to make Mysore silk. Ramanagara is known as the largest market for silk cocoons in Asia. Frequently, it produces 50 tonnes of cocoon per day in the town. Also, it is known to have wide-ranging granite sites. 

Ramanagara is a district erected out of the former Bengaluru Rural district on 23rd August 2007. It is made up of Rmanagara, Channapatana, Kannapura and Magadi Taluks. Although Ramanagara is a town, it is also the state municipal council in Karnataka.

GRANITES

Closet granites, which date from the Lower Proterozoic age, are a key geological characteristic of this area. The corridor of rocks extends in the north-south in a 50 km belt. This corridor has younger potassium granites and is believed to be two separate distinct crustal blocks of Archaeon age. The block towards the west has low-grade granite-greenstone belts with iron-manganese ores and to the east is the younger genesis of granite and granodiorite composition of gold-bearing schist belts.

Ramanagara is famous for its traditional toys and cultural activities. It is Asia’s most important market.

Ramanagara can be reached by Karnataka and Karnataka State road and Train within one hour. The nearest airports Mysore and Bangalore international Airport are about 85 km away.

ROCK CLIMBING

Ramadevara Betta has garnered a lot of attention for the Sholay film shooting here. It is located in Sugganahalli in the Ramanagara district about 48 km from Bangalore. Ramadevara is known for rock climbing. It is free and can be attempted between 9 am and 5 pm. The hills are a part of the Ramanagara trek, which showcases all the parts of the district. Also known as Ramanagara Betta, it is home to a variety of birds. You can do bird watching for leisure. The bird-watching spot is located at a flight of approximately 400 steps through a forest. On top of the hill is a small temple called the Sri Pattabhi Rama Temple.

Ramanagara Silk Cocoon Market walk

It is located in Ijoor of the Ramanagar district, 40 km away from Bangalore. The Ramanagara Silk Cocoon market is Asia’s largest cocoon market. Daily, this market sells 50,00 kgs of freshly cultivated cocoons. Extending across two acres, the cocoon market is the best place to shop for traditional silk artwork. You can take a tour of the silk industries, walk through the market, and check out market vendors. The Ramanagara Silk Cocoon Market is open all day and there is no admission charge.
